ABOUT

The Aims of this website is to introduce the model of “Ring-Shaped Island” for those who are interested in my research.

The model is thought-provoking, especially for those with strong visual imaginations. Some even told me it’s an archetype.

The “Ring-Shaped Island" model will help

—to explain the dynamics of collective trauma,

—to grasp the unspeakable nature of trauma,

—to figure out when and where people can speak about trauma.

—to consider their own positions and relationships to others in traumatic situations.

The book, “Ring-Shaped Island (Kanjou-tou): Geopolitics of Trauma," that I published in 2007 (in Japanese) was received passionately, highly-acclaimed and sited by many authors.

Some have further expanded on my model for their own situations and purposes.

When the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred in 2011, I found the model very useful, for the victims and their supporters at the disaster area to understand where they stand and what relationships they can build with each other. My thoughts became a book, “Disaster Trauma and Restoration Stress” (2011).

The “Ring-Shaped Island” model was also received enthusiastically in other countries where I gave English presentations.  The English article was published in an international journal (Violence and Victims) in 2014.

I once had an art workshop and actually created a physical Ring-Shaped Island with the participants. It was such a meaningful opportunity that I look forward to doing it again.

I’m now also considering collecting articles, novels, poems and other artworks on Ring-Shaped Island.  Hope you will join us!
